Twelve months ago, Australia introduced the National Lung Cancer Screening Program. It helps eligible Australians access free lung cancer screening with a low-dose CT chest scan.

Since then, our Victorian medical imaging network has performed over 6,800 free screening scans.

This network includes Lake Imaging, Capital Radiology and The X-Ray Group. These scans have helped people across Victoria take an important step toward earlier detection and better health outcomes.

Why early detection matters

Lung cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages. Screening can find early warning signs before symptoms appear. Treatment is often more effective then, and outcomes can improve significantly. The National Lung Cancer Screening Program helps find lung cancer earlier and save lives through early detection.

Eligibility for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program

You may be eligible for free screening if you:

  • Are aged 50–70
  • Currently smoke, or quit smoking within the last 10 years
  • Meet the National Lung Cancer Screening Program eligibility criteria

Talk to your GP to determine if screening is right for you.

What happens after a GP referral?

If you are eligible, your GP can refer you for a free low-dose CT chest scan. You can have it at a participating location in Victoria. Our network includes clinics in both metropolitan and regional Victoria, making it easier to access care close to home.

What to expect at your appointment

A screening scan is quick, simple and non-invasive.

  • The appointment typically takes around 10 minutes
  • No needles are required
  • The scan uses a low dose of radiation
  • You can usually return to your normal activities straight after your appointment

Who receives the results?

Our experienced team will review your scan. They send the results to your GP, who will discuss the outcome with you and explain any recommended next steps. If you need further investigation, your GP can guide you through the process.
