Who is eligible for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP)?

Starting on 1 July 2025, eligible Australians can get a free low-dose CT scan. This is part of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP). The goal is to find lung cancer early when it is easiest to treat by offering bulk-billed chest scans.

You may be eligible for this screening if you:

  • Are aged 50 to 70 years
  • Have a history of long-term exposure to lung health risk factors
  • Are asymptomatic (not currently showing signs of lung illness)
  • Have not had a chest scan for lung health screening in the past 12 months

Eligibility is assessed through a simple online or in-person risk check. If you qualify, your doctor will send you for a bulk-billed low-dose CT chest scan.

This screening program is part of a national effort. It aims to find lung conditions early. The goal is to reduce late-stage diagnoses. This will help improve health outcomes for Australians at risk.

Why Early Detection Matters

By identifying conditions at their earliest, most treatable stages, it’s possible to significantly improve health outcomes.

Doctors often find lung cancer in its late stages. However, it has better treatment success rates when caught early.

Regular screenings help you stay healthy. They let you and your doctor make a personal treatment plan if needed.
